Although Baby Scream are a band, songwriter and vocalist Juan Mazzola is the driving force. Since 2001 the band has existed as a solo project, an acoustic duo or a full band, performing and recording in a variety of styles from Britpop to punk, before settling on their current approach, which involves tuneful 70's Glam + Britpop//Big Star/Superstar/Beatles-inspired pop. There's a large element of this band that would no doubt appeal to fans John Lennon and Marc Bolan. The (crunchy) Teenage Fanclub-ish 'Powerpop Crush' announces Mazzolla's intent, and the moody 'Exile' is a treat. Additionally, the martial, staccato 'Getting Better'-like beat of 'Mental Case' is irresistible and the social conscience of 'Watching the End of the World (on TV)' is backed up by its intelligent melody and structure. Mazzolla has been known to channel John Lennon in his vocal style, and 'What About You' finds him channeling the snarling Lennon of 'How Do You Sleep' to good effect. A high-quality outing that wears its influences well. It's pop with a little bit 'o ragged swagger!
